I have to hand it to Jen Lancaster She s not only funny smart and a good writer she s willing to make herself the butt of joke after joke no matter how bad those funny stories make her appear How many of us would be willing to do that This is a very timely book about being unemployed in America Lancaster and her husband were unemployed for almost two years Their story will resonate many people who thought secretly that there was s something wrong with people who were unemployed until they found themselves without a paycheck
There are a lot of people who own Prada bags and may even have brought them to the Illinois Unemployment Office but not many people are willing to tell you the whole humilating story in detail Nor are they willing to tell you about having their unemployment check delayed by a clerk who likes to tell you Oh I remember you Ms Prada when she receives the call begging for the check
Jen Lancaster is willing to tell you all about how she worked her way in to a job she may not have deserved for a salary she may not have deserved She s willing to tell you about the humiliation of realizing that she waaay overspent on stupid things And she s a better person than she gives herself credit for There s a place in this book where Lancaster s husband who becomes clinically depressed is so ill that he cannot function Lancaster tells you matter of factly how she got him help stood by him and did everything she could to get him on his feet She also tells you how she rescued dogs because well she fell in love with them There s not a place in this book where Lancaster elaborates on the good things she did and that is impressive
Bitter is the New Black is not about how everyone is responsible for the predicament Lancaster and her husband found themselves in Its not about how she discovered that she had some kind of disorder that made her self centered Its about how she realized how selfish and spoiled she had become how difficult she made life for her husband her parents and her friends Lastly its about how she decided to become a better person How on earth is that not a good thing
I laughed like crazy all through this book Lancaster will never be the perfect person but she sure is honest and her book is so funny you can t help but wish you could sit down with her yourself

What an amazingly funny book I would find myself laughing out loud without a smidgen of embarrassment as others turned to look at me I love the notations at the bottom of the page cool idea to incorporate throughout the memoir I would sneak away at lunch and read for my entire break because I didn t want to wait until quitting time to start back reading At bedtime I simply couldn t put the book down Needless to say I finished in no time I ve also passed on to several friends
