I loved this book and found it very hard to put down It was easy reading and based on Washington s own correspondence I was fortunate to read it during the time that Obama s health care bill was being past so I really could understand how far away from the Constitution that this administration is I plan to purchase this book for each of my grandsons for our family 4th of July celebration This book is a keeper

Everyone who knows about Washington knows he was not only NOT over rated he was under rated His character shined throughout his life not just as a military officer and president Unfortunately many today who are less than 30 years old honor him for being the general that won the War of Independence but not for his character They simply consider him a rich slave owner without considering circumstances and his time period
Washington and the other Virginian leaders knew of the evils of slavery and did their best to cope with it But I ask everyone a question Would it have been better if the southern leaders had opposed slavery without compromise if it meant that the Consitution would never had been ratified and therefore no USA at that time By the way there are excellent books on Amazon where you can read all the debates by the Founding Fathers on slavery and other issues
Keep in mind that George Washington had faith in his cause but he must have thought it was hopeless yet he continued what he believed in knowing it would cost him his own property and life Indeed anyone and everyone knew it was hopeless until Tom Paine Benjamin Franklin and others had greater influence on the outcome
Yes I do love George Washington and the other founders To know him is to love him applies to all the founders and it makes me sad that so few realize it

This book taught me history that I did not know reminded me of things I had forgotten George Washington should be a great inspiration to us all in these times of trouble when it seems our country has lost its way
