Lift
>> Rainy afternoon
This was a perfect rainy day book Even with no children of my own i could feel the motherly love Made me see my own mother differently I now understand why she still tears up when my siblings and I tease each other about the crazy things we did as kids A great happy read just wish it had been longer
>> Leaving A Legacy For Her Kids
LIFT is Kelly Corrigan s second book and is written as a letter from Kelly to her daughters Georgia and Claire It is a candid look into her every day life with her two wonderful daughters and how the little moments as a family help to shape and mold who she is as a mother
She talks to her daughters about the challenges like when her youngest daughter ended up in the ICU and the decisions that have to be made as a parent sometimes on the fly
She confesses her at times impatience with her children the times when she has failed them like when it comes to talking about God and the anxieties that she has had in regards to being their mother should I be the one raising you For example Kelly says I often feel like I m not explaining things right to you probably because half the time I don t understand them myself
To me it is a realistic journey into the heart of a mother and how difficult it is to be one She talks about things that many Moms face day to day but also gives explanation for so much of it
I hurt you once Georgia you took a few steps away from me right into traffic I was digging my fingers into your shoulders too deeply and you cried because it hurt but I didn t care It was worth it I just thought She has to remember this this might be my chance to save her Don t we all as mothers do things that we may regret or punish in a way that at the moment it may not be right but damn it I bet you won t run in the street again
As a Mom I can completely understand where Kelly is coming from and why a book like this will be so important and so cherished by her children when they are older They will gain insight into her mothering and why she did what she did
She also weaves in the story of two women close to her Kathy who lost her son in a car accident and Meg who chose to have a child as a single woman by using a sperm bank She shares with her daughters how these two women s lives have shaped her parental views
It is filled with moments of humor raw emotion and honesty
My default answer to everything is no As soon as I hear the inflection of inquiry in your voice the word no forms in my mind
I agree with her on that one I often joke that my daughter will think her name is Cadence No when she is older Kelly defines parenthood as a bold and dangerous thing as ordinary and tedious and aggravating and then so divine
Kelly hit the nail right on the head with that definition This book is so great and in my opinion is a quick read and a must read As a letter writer myself I highly encourage other parents to use this book as an inspiration to write your own letter to your children
>> A great read
Lift is a wonderfully delightful read A great follow up to Corrigan s memoir A Middle Place Written as a love letter to her two daughters the author does a admirable job describing a parent s love for their child Especially affecting was the passage about Corrigan s friend deciding to have artificial insemination and when telling her very catholic very conservative Grandmother is unexpectedly blessed to have her complete support Lift has inspired me write a letter to my own young daughters
