I went to the bookstore last night in search of a steamy romance novel as an escape from my daily life The selection of the romance section of this bookstore was peculiarly sparse so I threw up my hands in despair and declared this would be a night of no book to read As I was walking out the door there were books on display and this one book The Walk caught my eye I opened it and read the first page or two Hmmmm a trek to Key West Seems like a good escape to me So I bought the book unbeknownst to me that it just came out 2 days ago and that the author was so famous I sorta thought I recognized his name but it didn t really click until I came to Amazon com to enter my review WoW
I have no idea what made me pick up this book as it is not the sort of book I usually read but I am so glad I did Richard Paul Evans truly has a gift
No need for me to go into what this book is about since the other reviewers have already done that But I do want to add that I think it was truly delightful that at almost every diner that Alan stopped to eat there was either a world famous shake or world famous hamburger I loved it It s a heart wrenching book but it contains a hidden meaning treasure what you have today and be grateful for it for tomorrow it may be gone
Be sure you have enough time to read this book in one sitting because you will not want to put it down

The Walk by Richard Paul Evans is my first book by this author and I have committed to read the rest of the series I hope it can stand up to The Walk s standard
Alan Christoffersen had a great life Successful business nice home great cars and a beautiful and adoring wife What else could he want But life and fate have a cruel surprise for Alan First his wife is severely injured in a fall from a horse After turning his business over to his partner and best friend so he could tend to his injured wife he finds that his business associate ruins the business and takes advantage of Alan s But the shocks don t end there as his entire world implodes In the end Alan is left with almost nothing
In an effort to make some sense of what befalls him Alan decides to chuck it all and walk across the country This is mindful of the 60 s television show Route 66 where two young men travel from point to point with no real purpose in mind The difference of course is that Alan is walking and not driving around in a hot Corvette Of course Along Came Bronson explored the same idea but with a lone rider on a motorcycle However I think The Walk is original in its own right
What makes The Walk work for me is that I m not clear what Alan is looking for Is he cleansing his soul or seeking some missing insight to his life Perhaps some deeper question for him needs to be answered Maybe he s not really sure what the question is let alone the answer I was never sure and that is an asset in favor of the story The reader is not given any answers not yet anyway There is another aspect to The Walk that works in favor of the story Many readers have been knocked around because of the decline of the economy Lost fortunes lost homes and maybe ruined families should make Alan s story identifiable Though our misfortunes may be more financial than the emotional dilemma facing Alan the fact of the matter is that many are a little tender emotionally That also works for the book
I have avoided Mr Evan s books to this point I read many books and there always seemed to be something more inviting to spend my time and my money on However a series of five books and a walk across the heartland to Key West is a twist I can t resist
I think you ll enjoy The Walk on its own not to mention the promised stories to come
I have to give The Walk 5 stars with the hope that the larger story delivers

I love the picturesque descriptions the author portrays as Alan travels from one destination to another I feel like I m along for the walk as in my mind I live the events taking place I laughed and cried I m excited this is going to be a 5 book series I already feel like the main character is my friend
