>> A Cautionary Tale
What a sad life Mack has had Perhaps it is not typical to read a memoir punctuated by low points rather than high points but that is what Phillips born in 1959 mostly gives us Born to a celebrity narcissistic father she is candid is telling us her tale of his starting her on cocaine at age ten That began her downward spiral into drug and alcohol addictions that she has found difficult to break If you want the real scoop on a cocaine junkie read this book it s an eye opener But her mother was an alcoholic and if you haven t heard the story about a child who never got properly parented then that is here also She gets raped she gets kidnapped she has a near death experience and she gets into a ten year incestuous relationship with her father which is what this book will be remembered for But she also features in American Graffiti and One Day at a Time being fired from the latter not once but twice Her first love is Peter Asher the British record producer but his being married and her infidelity put the kibosh on that relationship She sleeps with Mick Jagger then turns to him for avuncular advice She married her first husband who loots her for about 700K during their 7 month marriage During their honeymoon her Laurel Canyon home burned down along with her wedding presents and all of her possessions She goes on to have a miscarriage an abortion because it could have been her father s child and then a baby whose pregnancy was marred by her drug use during its first six months But Shane turns out to be a healthy boy Mack s only child and perhaps someone to redeem her But her marriage to the child s father fails and the book ends with Mack clean and sober but jobless and with an empty nest Please read this book for its open honesty and then hope that she has at last put herself out of harm s way
>> A Survivor s Story
I reluctantly read this book to my elderly father who had seen Ms Phillips on TV and thus became interested in her story Being the same age as the author I grew up with her in a sense I disliked Mackenzie on One Day At a Time as she just seemed like another junkie to me
Well I have to admit we enjoyed the book a lot and I have a new appreciation for her I admire the courage it took to tell this story and I didn t get the impression at all that she was being disingenuous at any point
The only knock I have is that the narrative is somewhat repetitive especially near the end but I suppose that s the way it actually transpired
The next time I see Ms Phillips at the local mall I will approach and shake her hand for she is indeed a survivor
