Katherine Hilbery has everything she is beautiful well born intelligent kind reflective sensitive though not in a sentimental way but bored She must find a purpose in life other than being of a wealthy Chelsea family and the descendant of a famous poet and she must choose between the weak willed sophisticate William and the tempestuous Ralph Though the love of the self sacrificing suffragette Mary Datchet for Ralph and the upcoming law clerk s failure to realise he is in thrall to Katherine provide a few twists and turns such is in essence the plot of Night and Day

All would be well if this were the psychological drama it appears to be set in an atmospheric turn of the century London But Virginia Woolf also pursues a political message in this novel women answer to male stereotypes and vice versa The women are logical and career minded the men coy and romantic This might be fine and it makes for a few good scenes except that it doesn t quite fit the characters Mary s ill starred fate seems gratuitous Katherine s interest in mathematics is too obviously a code never properly illustrated And her falling in love with Ralph isn t credible she is too good for him and it is all too sudden It seems Night and Day can t quite choose what it is supposed to be psychological or social comedy It lacks the simplicity of Woolf s first novel The Voyage Out the wistfulness of Mrs Dalloway or the experimental complexity of her later works

Sorry to say but this is one of the worst books I ve read over the last 12 months I could manage somehow to read through the pages where the author is trying to connect the Bushes to the Kennedy assassination But when I thought I was through it started all over again
I couldn t believe anything
The whole story could have found a better place in one of the tabloids

In FAMILY OF SECRETS Russ Baker has compiled an underground history of the Bush family focused primarily on Poppy ie George H W and W Much of it centers around Poppy Bush s longtime connections with the covert intelligence world starting long before his brief stint as CIA head in the Ford Administration and on W s rise which is almost totally due to family connections privilege and deception Baker connects Poppy Bush to such important events as the Kennedy Assassination and Watergate This isn t speculation either all of Baker s claims are well documented

In the case of W we get a lot of damnging information such as the mountain of evidence Baker presents that A W got his spot in the Texas Air Guard entirely due to family connections despite being unqualified and B W did in fact go AWOL and never completed his required Guard service The evidence the Bush campaign produced to back up their claim that Bush did honorably complete his service is shown by Baker to be EXTREMELY questionable despite the fact that it resulted in Dan Rather being fired and most of the media and the people accepting W s story

Along the way we get lots of interesting information and connection to other American Power Elite families such as the Harrimans and the Dulleses and many more Personally I would have liked to see more on the earlier Bushes such as Samuel and Prescott Poppy s grandfather and father respectively and their Power Elite/military industrial complex connections but since FAMILY OF SECRETS is already so large and extensive covering those earlier generations would probably more appropriate for a seperate book

Baker deserves a lot of credit for doing a lot of old fashioned research reporting and muckraking He also deserves credit for adopting a largely neutral nonpartisan tone throughout the book His progressive partisanship comes through in a few spots but for the most part he s remarkably even handed in his delivery This book is exensively documented well written and more than anything eye opening

I am horrified to have read Family of Secrets and to now realize that so much of what has happened over the past sixty years has been a series of schemes that have successfully duped the people bought the legislators judiciary and media in order to profit the wealthy beyond anyone s wildest dreams and to have everyone believe that cheering this evolution is the wholesome and patriotic duty of all onlookers
Wars assassinations and even depressions have worked to the successful emergence of an oil gas military profiting oligarchy whose consequences still haven t dawned on the subscribers to right wing conservative talk show hosts who seek solely the conservation and enhancement of the wealth of the already superrich The Kennedys Jimmy Carter and now Barack Obama have been inundated by the vitriol of these while saying no to all and every program to correct the abuses and end spending which solely seeks the magnification of the wealth of the already haves
I would require every legislator Judge and executive to read this book and apply to themselves the realization which Nathan helped David see when he said to the King those devastating words You are that man 2Samuel 12 7
It is imperative that these wrongdoers not be allowed to get away with these deeds through Macchiavellian maneuvers by Rove and Cheney or even by Limbaugh Murdoch and FOX NEWS
Secrecy and clandestine behaviour is frequently the ambient cover for evil doers of whatever political persuasion whereas bringing the secrets out into the light have always been the best conditions for the sustenance of LIFE LIBERTY and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS

I am a Sarah Vowell fan but this book was a bit too wordy for my taste It is more of a commentary on early writings rather than merely account of history with interpretation by Sarah One needs to really love this stuff to stay with her while she picks apart every sentence and nuance However if you are a real history buff particularly early American history and the influence of religion you will enjoy it

I have enjoyed several of Sarah Vowell s other works especially Take the Cannoli and The Partly Cloudy Patriot However this one is truly horrible While it s obviously painstakingly researched I doubt many readers would truly enjoy this unless they are really REALLY into the history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony

I only made it about halfway through and I almost NEVER give up on a book before the end ZERO STARS Very disappointing Sarah

I could not put it down The strength of this book is Van Meegeren himself

The book races by trying to cover as much of the whirlwind as possible the art the forgery the lies the lifestyle the marriages the Nazis and the aftermath The story of a consummate con artist in every sense The book does a wonderful job covering certain details of art forgery for that time period though I should state I am neither an art expert nor an art historian

I wish the book went greater into depth regarding the wheeling of all the dealing but perhaps it is lost in history Names of friends and rivals fly by and money and fake masterpieces change hands and countries eventually lose their governments You want to know more about these people but the author feels the need to get it all in

Even the aftermath is quite a spectacle The book makes you want to know more about Lt Joseph Piller and if records could be found what the experts really thought when they discovered their own hoodwinking It is remarkable to see a man like Van Meegeren snake through every danger coming out some sort of cultural hero while he left behind him so many ruined reputations

As the author appropriately recites from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance When the legend becomes fact print the legend The author wrote down the facts too

I thought this book would tell the story of an amiable rogue who fooled the art establishment and even top Nazi Hermann Goering by faking Vermeers It turned out to be much more than that It s the tale of a creepy fascist with a specific political agenda who used his fakes to advance a form of art that glorified the Nazi view of the world

Han van Meegeren seems to have been a puffed up creep from the start He had some talent as shown by the illustrations of some of his portraits reproduced in this book but his conservative bent and limited imagination meant he was never destined for greatness

Instead he began painting fake Vermeers His early efforts were genre interior scenes similar to those of the master himself But then he hit another vein entirely manufacturing a new and entirelu false chapter of the artist s career during which Vermeer allegedly devoted himself to painting somber Biblical scenes

You look at the reproductions of these pictures and you wonder how they fooled anyone at all They are dull lifeless full of lugurious piety of the worst kind the very antithesis of the glowing work of Vermeer Yet these crude daubings took in most of the Dutch art establishment of the time Once he had established the first fake of this kind it became progressively easier to continue fooling everyone since each subsequent painting was clearly the work of the same artist

The author explains how some of the coded and subliminal messages in these images appealed to something in the air during the 1930s when Nazi ideology loomed larger and larger in Europe For the first time he unveils the depth of van Meegeren s Nazi sympathies and decodes his evil messages The amount of research that went into this book is prodigious but the writing is always clear

Van Meegeren fooled the art experts of his time he fooled Goering and he fooled his interrogators after the war He fooled the world press he fooled the judge and jury during his trial and he fooled the Dutch public He died unexpectedly without ever paying for his actions But thanks to this great book he will not fool posterity

Jack McLean s memoirs brought forth an interesting story of his life from adolescence to manhood He makes the reader feel as though they were there right along with him on his journey through school boot camp and Viet Nam To hear the truth from someone who gives an honest account of what really happened in Viet Nam was effective and mood altering It gives one a sense of pride to be an American I ve waited 42 years to hear the truth I would love to read another book by this author I would like to thank him his comrades and his fallen brothers for their commitment to the American people True patriots
