Hopefully another reviewer has put the following more eloquently than I What made this book memorable for me was that it showed how adopting a special needs animal although challenging is greatly rewarding Maybe it s because a special needs pet requires more attention and the more love and attention we as people give the more rewarding the relationship and the closer we feel to our friend in fur scales feathers shell etc I certainly feel that way about my special needs cat

Pneumatological christology The 1500 anniversary of the schismatic Council of Chalcedon was marked by the year 1951 Since then theological reflection in the field of christology has experienced an outburst that is as remarkable as promising It reflects the belief that the landmark christology council of the fifth century does not terminate Christological debates as the guidelines for a continuing dialogue As that dialogue has continued in the last half of the ending century one of the promising areas of development is that of Spirit christology a modern retrieval of an unmistakable presence of a pneumatological Spiritual understanding of Jesus the messianic Christ of the New Testament as an absolute biblical idea in early Christianity Among contemporary theologians one of the pioneers and proponents of a Spirit driven christology was Walter Kasper This christology is clearly evident in Kasper s book Jesus the Christ as well as earlier in some of his writings He seems to backup from such approach in some of his later writings as in The God of Jesus Christ Kasper s Son christology looks as a shift away from his pneumatological christology Instead of developing such pneumatological approach to christology in his later writings he return to a solid Logos oriented model for presenting the mystery of Christ The Spirit christology model is seen as complementary to the Logos model While honoring the divinity of Jesus Christ it renders his human and historical nature more intelligible using a language true to Chalcedon but adequate to contemporary discourses in the Church the academy and society

Book Review Walter Cardinal Kasper President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligous Dialogue is one of T bingen s utmost Catholic dogmatic theologians He presents a remarkably concise study and an informative Christology Rooted in the ancient and medieval Chaledonian tradition he is momentarily informed on recent Christological trends exegetical and theologo sophical In concise exploring style Kasper tackles almost all the normative Christological questions such as the eternal pre existence of the Logos the hypostatic union the virginal conception the freedom of Jesus from sin his Messianic claims his miracles resurrection Kasper treats the redemptive character of Jesus s sacrificial death unwilling to separate Christology from soteriology unlike Chalcedon Opposing liberal Christologies Kasper thus stands with the seven councils and the mainstream of the traditional theologians a position he alters in his later writings Twentieth century secular and anthropologists present Jesus as the zenith of the evolutionary process the ultimate fulfillment of essential humanity Such theologies as by Teilhard de Chardin Karl Rahner and Wolfhart Pannenberg reduce Christ to a mere symbol of human cosmic evolution Kasper harshly criticizes of the Catholic theologian Piet Schoonenberg even accusing him of Modalism by holding that Jesus is a human not a divine person
Avery Dulles Comments Cardinl Dulles Catholic University of America thinks that Kasper seeks to validate the ancient dogmas in terms of an approach influenced by modern personalist anthropologies In order to place Christology in an adequate framework Kasper probes deeply into many related themes such as human freedom personality corporeality sin redemption salvation historicity and eschatology He provides likewise in fine print concise and lucid summaries of the history of dogma and of modern theological opinions In opposition to the evolutionists Kasper insists on the freedom and unpredictability of God s interventions in salvation history He holds that person is higher and more ultimate than nature and consequently that it is appropriate to speak of three divine persons though Barth and Rahner have intimated that the term person in this context may be confusing On the basis of a modern relational concept of personality Kasper holds that Jesus is both a human and a divine person that is a human person whose transcendental openness is definitively determined by his oneness with the person of the divine Logos Within these Trinitarian perspectives Kasper seeks to revive the early Spirit Christology which is biblical as well as Jewish Christian The Incarnation according to Kasper is effected by the personal activity of the Holy Spirit whose sanctifying presence is constitutive of the human person of Jesus The risen Jesus in turn sends forth the Holy Spirit as his very own and in this way continually inaugurates the eschatological era of salvation

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World >> The remake of King Khan I ve read a few books on Genghis Khan and all of them had their focus on the military achievements of the Mongols their savagery and ferocity It was about the Mongol cavalry their accurate archers with special bows the ruthless warriors whose body armour covered only their front tactics of feigning retreat blitzkriegs and details of their brutality Reading some of these books it s pretty obvious that unlike Alexander Genghis Khan didn t invest in a good PR machine the only objective of his PR machine seems to have been to spread macabre stories stories of their own savagery and scare the opponents to submission This book is a bit different In addition to what we normally hear it also shows the positive side of the Mongol conquests supposedly gleaned by the author after extensive research in Mongolia and elsewhere We hear about the opening up of trade routes movement of skilled individuals across the empire thereby spreading knowledge religious tolerance position based on skills and not nepotism sound organizational skills and more The author even talks about how the Renaissance was influenced by King Khan s conquests All of this might be true and some good must have come of the Mongol conquests at least inadvertently However given that there are very few surviving historical records the Mongols didn t have a written language one gets the feeling that all this debate about Good vs Bad of Mongol deeds are pretty much speculations The books is well written and the explanation style is captivating >> Kahn Polemic The first part of the book was a good read It covered the life of Genghis Kahn sufficiently to get the sense of the man as a human being rather than the monster history has often shown him to be
However the last part of the book seems to step out of the history telling mode and into what seemed to me to be a quite biased view of the legacy of Kahn
To me the last part of the book maybe the last 1/3 was a waste of time It made one doubt the honest scholarship in the preceding 2/3 of the book Thus to get the full picture of Genghis Kahn one has to look farther afield than this book only If this is the only book you read about Genghis Kahn you will have an incomplete idea of who he was and the impact he had on history >> Great read It would be very foolish and unwise to not read this book if your a history lover The author s writes very fluid and concise and easy to follow This book really help broaden my understanding of the middle ages and how the Mongolian empire operated I never knew the Mongols were the key catalyst in linking the separate middle age kingdoms of the world into the modern world Mongols never created or invented anything What they did do was link the worlds of Asia Europe and Muslim into a global integrated world Mongols took the best of each civilization and passed it to the next The Europe region was the most poor and backwards and benefited the most The Muslim world was the most advanced and wealthy and suffered the worse Mongolian wreckage While Genghis was not a saint he pioneered a new world order that would form the modern global world Mongols pioneered free trade and international commerce Really the first empire to do this since the Romans
Mongols were the greatest warriors of the middle ages They made the heavy slow armored knights of Europe absolute They perfected Chinese siege technology to the highest levels Mongols crushed any resistance from the slow European armies to Muslims to the Chinese without any trouble In the end like most empires the Mongolian world suffered a fragmented world where sons of previous Khans could never co exist or get along The empire became weaker and more fragmented Finally the Black Death of the 14th Century put in end to most of the great empire Don t want to give out all the great details Just get the book I finished it in a week it was that good and i read slow

On Gold Mountain The One Hundred Year Odyssey of My Chinese American Family >> On Gold Mountain by Lisa See I like Lisa See s books especially the ones that talk about the Chinese culture On Gold Mountain is very interesting and also sad because of the way the Chinese were treated when they came to the U S I would recommend this book >> A Book Only a Mother Could Love On Gold Mountain is the history of the See family and like most histories it is most interesting to the one telling it For me this book club choice was boring with a capital B Approximately 400 pages of family history from Lisa See s great great grandfathers immigration to work on the transcontinetal railroad to her latest sojourn to the small Chinese town of Dimato to meet her great grandfathers and great uncles third and fourth family relatives from their concubines left in China Make your head spin Keeping the memebers of the original See family straight was tough but trying to keep up with the second wives third wives and fourth wives and their children was frustrating and boring It seemed to me that this was in essence the American story It told about the lives of immigrants who came to a new place to find wealth and happiness and instead found discrimination back breaking work and in the Fong See s case success Lisa See interjects throughout the book facts regarding Chinese discrimination and hardship through the years as this group of immigrants struggle to become citizens with equal rights in this country In all the most amazing part of the book for me was the marriage between Fong See and Letticie Pruitt This was an unheard of union at the time and must have required a bravery on both their parts The fact that this couple produced four sons and one daugther and two successful import companies is no small feat As the book went on it was heartbreaking to read about the distance petty differences and shortcomings between the five original See children I suppose that their story is also the story of every family As children grow up they often grow apart What original immigrant parents value their children often turn against In the end Lisa See provided a very detailed account of her families joys hardships success and failures For me it was about 200 pages too long and in the end bittersweet >> Good Read This book was required for a class It was nice because I actually enjoyed this book

It takes off where the last book left it Katie now known as Katherine is staying with some Mennonite relatives and is searching for her birth mother She finds what she thinks is her mother only to encounter a rough time with her husband Dylan Bennet who is waiting for his wife to die so he can inherit her wealth
Katherine leaves her relatives and goes to her mother s house only to find that another Katie Lapp has appeared there and has been welcomed as her mothers daughter While she was debating going Dylan had hired an actress to fool his wife by thinking the girl was her heir
Katherine unsure of what to do takes a position as a maid at the household and hopes to get close to her mother Being that her mother plans on announcing the inheritance at Christmas the next day time seems to run short for her Especially when Dylan finds out who she really is
It sounded like a promising sequel when I read the summary of it However the reality wasn t as promising Lewis hurries the story along but its so boring and inconceivable who would let a deception like that take place knowingly that I didn t have much patience with it and was glad it didn t take long to read
While Lewis writing is always pleasant and authentic it just didn t make up for the story line >> Great Find I was surprised at how captivating this book was I really enjoyed it I enjoyed it enough to order the second one in the series It wasn t a romance novel or another thriller just an interesting draw you in kind of book that you finish in a day or two Perfect for a long flight >> A disappointment What a disappointment While The Shunning Lewis first book in this trilogy was wonderful for its authenticity in the depiction of a young Amish woman s desperate inner identity struggle The Confession was awkward and contrived Evil husband hires actress to pretend to be wealthy wife s long lost daughter in order to gain inheritance Main protagonist predictably perseveres in the end and convinces birth mother she is the real daughter It was a plot I would have expected from a 12 year old and an uncreative 12 year old at that or a cheesy Lifetime channel movie with a cast of D list actors
After reading The Shunning free on Kindle I was eager to read the rest of the trilogy However after purchasing and reading The Confession I doubt I would ever pay to read The Reckoning If it s ever free on Kindle one day I ll add it to my list of books to read but after the disappointing second book I don t intend on ponying up the 9 99 for the last part of this trilogy There are other books I d rather buy
