Dewey The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World >> Dewey I purchased this book for my daughter she has told me so much about the book that I will read it myself when she is done If you love cats please read >> Touching and inspiring story Though at times I felt like the author rambled a bit and overdid what has become a cliche in American culture by exalting the supposed virtues of small town life overall this was an entertaining and touching book that I very much enjoyed reading Toward the end it seemed like the story began to drift but it all comes together with a powerful and emotional conclusion I don t think it s worthy of five stars but it easily earns four It is definitely worth your time >> So Not the Cat s Meow I am shocked on how many people really thought this book was a five I consider a 5 starred book to have it all I read Marley and Me and loved it It was a touching story about a man and his dog I was hoping for the feline version of this Boy was I wrong Dewey despite being the title s namesake is NOT about a lovable cat Its about the author Its really all about her Part of the author s life is when she found an orange tabby Also she makes this cat into more than what he could have possibly been I understand the bond between animal and people but she personifies Dewey as her little god In a way the book really made me sad The author sounds like she was a very lonely lady and instead of a husband she had Dewey The small parts about Dewey are cute Its the one highlight in this book Also as an avid reader this book is poorly written It reads like the back of milk jug The author has a poor way with words and some of her word play is over ambitious for her
Check this book out from the library I would not pay for it and after reading it you wouldn t want to either

I was so sorry that there were not more chapters to read internalize and describe to others Then I discovered Judith Orloff has several other books and workshops LUCKY US
I can highly recommend her writing style to anyone whether they are interested in intuition or not The tale is extraordinary The ride was exhilarating >> Second Sight Everyone who wishes for life at its fullest should read this book I always had GREAT intuition but everyone thought I was nuts But if you have intuitions this book will affirm it to you and help you strengthen them Greatly written >> A must read This is a must read It will open your mind heart and soul into avenues that are simply incredible

Lunch in Paris A Love Story with Recipes >> A book that leaves you smiling When I first saw Lunch in Paris in Barnes and Noble I picked it up flipped through the pages and decided not to buy it I came home read some reviews online and bought it the next day I m so glad I did
This was my very first American in Paris book and I can say that I really enjoyed reading it My boyfriend is French so I was able to relate to many of the awkward and frustrating experiences that Elizabeth went through It was fun to live vicariously through her transition into French culture
Her writing style is entertaining light and a fast read I keep up with her life/recipes by reading her blog
I ve tried a couple of recipes and they are delicious Overall I would say that this is a great book for someone looking for a fun read >> Delightful and Delicious I love reading books where the author paints pictures And Elizabeth Bard is a master at the craft You observe what she eating doing thinking all in exquisite detail
In the book Lunch In Paris A Love Story with Recipes Elizabeth recounts falling in love with a Parisian and immersing herself in the world of French cuisine She shares how she begins to understand the French mindset and eats like the French with the focus on quality not quantity
Interspersed throughout the book are rich recipes to tantalize the taste buds
Overall a very tasty read to savor and enjoy

Spark Notes The Bell Jar >> A view into madness in the 1950 s In college I took a literature course in American literature and my teacher chose the theme of madness for the course The syllabus called for a few of Ralph Ellison s works Toni Morrison s and Sylvia Plath s Sadly since the course was only ten weeks Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar was not discussed in the class I didn t bother to read the book until out of college
After reading reviews online I decided that I needed to take the time to read it Plath starts the story off really slow with Esther Greenwood explaining her internship over the summer For the first fifty pages I had no idea why it was deemed a classic However though slow I still had a desire to read what happened to Ms Greenwood The more that I read of the book the harder is was to put down If she would have shown the same symptoms today I do not believe that she would have been locked up in an asylum The book really makes society take a deep stare into itself to observe what is happening to the people of the nation
Being an English literature major in college I had the opportunity to read countless classics and consider myself to be well read I can honestly say that The Bell Jar is the only book that is considered a classic that has ever made me cry uncontrollably one minute when reading about the electro shock treatments and then a few moments later be laughing hyterically when Esther gives the nurse a piece of her mind when he serves her two different kinds of beans in one meal
This book is a must read for the female population and I recommend everyone reading it I don t really know why but I had a tendency to compare Esther to Holden Caulfield because of her self destruction and her could care less about what is right attitude It s such a shame that Plath took her life so early when she clearly had an incredible gift of writing >> For girls The same way that The Perks of Being a Wallflower is centered around a boy The Bell Jar is centered around a girl in the 1960s
From a guys point of view this book is boring
It s about these lame dinners and the girl getting sick and her pre occupied thoughts about some dude
This book is outdated and just plain boring I would not recommend it >> The Bell Jar For those of us who think we ve left the past behind and are terribly sophisticated Pick this book up Sylvia Plath is clearly more famous for poetry than prose but this novel written first person is able to subtly place the reader squarely in the protagonist s shoes The passage the air of the bell jar wadded around me and I couldn t stir illustrates the tactile feeling Plath s writing convey s and the sympathy it engenders in the reader This novel also reminds us that the more things change the more they stay the same in terms of social and mental health issues

Wesley the Owl The Remarkable Love Story of an Owl and His Girl >> Adorable Story Great Read I work with birds of prey including barn owls and have been hesitant to pick this up because I ve read a few memoirs from people with owls as pets that are infuriating misinformation illegality etc This is not one of those memoirs
It s a touching and unique story I can t say I ve ever known someone who had a boyfriend run off by a barn owl in the bedroom I love the description of the environment of Cal Tech Makes me wish I had studied there The book was well researched There were very few facts I took issue with which is an achievement considering that Wesley lived before we knew even as much as we do today about these creatures
We all know how any wildlife memoir ends but Wesley s story is funny and charming enough to soften the blow A great read I ve recommended it to everyone I know who s ever loved a raptor >> Enchanting There are already dozens of reviews of this book on Amazon so I shan t repeat the storyline for you However for those of you who have any feeling for the amazing stories of relationships between animals and humans this is a must read
Stacey and Wesley live their lives together from the time that the owl is four days old They form such a very strong relationship that they converse with each other and share each other s emotions happy and sad The story is beautifully narrated with sentiment and it will make you laugh and it will make you cry
Don t hang about waiting for me to say any more Go and get yourself a copy and read it I can safely say that you are more likely to thank me for that recommendation than to curse me for it

Nothing to Envy North Korean Loves >> Absolutely fascinating This is the best book I ve read so far this year The author tells a completely fascinating story of life in North Korea Most of us hear about the North Korean nuclear threat on the radio all the time but I suspect most people are like me and know very little about the country
The author describes North Korea from the perspective of several North Korean defectors Obviously defectors are going to be biased against the country so I do wonder if the portrait of the country is overly negative as a result However even if it is it s still a fascinating story The story starts after the Korean war and continues until the present day
Reading about the lives of these ordinary people will definitely change the way I think about North Korea when I hear about it in the news
The book is extremely well written and engrossing It s not a dry history book at all >> The best way to learn about North Korea I took one day out of my paternity leave for pleasure reading I selected a new Kindle book I bought after hearing the author interviewed on NPR Nothing to Envy Ordinary Lives in North Korea It was utterly fascinating I devoured it
Demick weaves a gripping narrative which puts the reader in contact with daily life north of the DMZ And the story is more than just exciting and interesting the relationship between Mi ran and Jun Sang not their real names has to be one of the most romantic stories I ve ever read
Demick focuses on people from the area around the North Korean city of Chong Jin She can tell such intimate stories about citizens of a closed country under an oppressive regime because she spoke to them personally They all defected or in one case were tricked into defecting and only then defected to South Korea where Demick the L A Times Korea correspondent was able to interview them
Not all of the defectors were born dissidents Several were classic true believers in the regime who only reluctantly gave up their religious faith in the Fatherly Leader Once inside South Korea most of them expressed some desire sometimes to go back northward
Reading this work gave me a deep sense of righteous anger at Kim Il Sung and his son Kim Jong Il I had already viewed the latter as a ridiculous man he wears silly jumpsuits and is always followed by fawning military officials in massive caps Now I view him as culpable for the deaths of millions Ideas have consequences and when your economic policies kill your own citizens you need to take responsibility and change the policies Instead the North Korean propaganda machine went into overdrive Let s all eat two meals a day
Kim Jong Il appears to believe his own propaganda If everyone around you agrees with everything you say and proclaims you an expert on everything from industrial glass production to the best bovine fertility practices perhaps it s inevitable that your pedestal s height starts to put you out of touch with the people on the ground
As I read I was filled with a desire to do something for these people and then I started to realize what that might mean South Koreans certainly have realized it according to the book Rehabilitating an entire half nation and bringing them up to the high tech standards of the other half would be costly and difficult Add to this the fact that a lifetime of conditioning has influenced the thinking of everyone Even defectors have a hard time making it in the South They have to go through a special government deprogramming
But nonetheless I have prayed that the true King of this world would depose the leader He for His own purposes set up decades ago Psalm 75 7 Romans 13 1 Kim Jong Il deserves to answer for his crimes primarily that of defacing the image of God by putting such little stock in the lives of God s image bearers
Buy this book for an education on the politics and history of North Korea and read and enjoy this book for the many personal stories that you can follow from their beginnings under oppression to their breakthrough to political at least freedom >> Fascinating Reading A fascinating well written and moving account of life in North Korea While I expected it would be a good book based on the reviews author and subject matter it exceeded my expectations I highly recommend it to anyone regardless of whether you have a strong interest in Korean history or culture I did not before reading this book I hope this book continues to receive the publicity accolades and readers it well deserves

Not only is the subject matter compelling but the writing itself propels you forward through each chapter >> Interesting but a bit convoluted This book is written like an unedited newspaper article really interesting stories and cool cultural background stuff about the Japanese way of life but it seems to me the stories need to be organized and chopped a bit to make them flow a little easier It s like sitting on a jury in a large trial the material is really amazing but each has a tendency to drag on and on and get a little confusing >> Disappointing I had really high hopes for this book but it was not to be The first third of this book is mostly filler and then when we get to the meat of the matter it s written rather dull Adelstein also seems to think we re all so interested in his sex life and I wasn t I was interested in the Yakuza I m sure the man had amazing experiences but I didn t think he communicated them very well
