Tattoos on the Heart The Power of Boundless Compassion >> This Book Touched My Heart After reading this book I am a different person I read each of the stories I cried and laughed It made me think about how easily I dismiss people and demonize them when I really don t really know them The last story about Chico broke my heart The book is written in a poetic style and it touched my heart I will be more compassionate to the students that I teach that are struggling >> Fabulous book Greg Boyle is one of the greatest persons I ve ever known The stories are riveting along with the spiritual insight I was impressed how he wrote the short story about the passing of his own father and how his mother s pillow played a part of that same story My wife and I also breathe the scents of each other during in our pillows when the other is not there >> Every human being should read this book It s about what it means to be human to seek the goodness within ourselves and everyone and everything around us It is thoroughly entertaining instructional thought provoking inspirational faith restoring I am halfway through the book and torn between devouring the rest in one sitting or drawing it out as long as possible It s one of those books that you know you will be sad when you reach the end because you loved it so much

Naked >> hysterical David Sedaris is an absolutely hysterical writer and this book does not disappoint His stories are always quirky but yet truthful and make me laugh out loud The only thing better than reading a story he has written is listening to the audio version of it b c there is just something about his slightly annoying voice that makes the stories sing >> Not an enjoyable experience I listened to the audiobook version The narrator has an unpleasant voice The humor is sophomoric including themes such as poop body parts etc A couple areas of this book were hysterically funny but it is a sad read overall Not recommended >> Lots of hoots and a few hollers Certainly one of the most amusing and entertaining books I ve read in quite some time Naked is a collection of David Sedaris narratives about his life adventures and his looney family I laughed out loud numerous times while reading this book and when I wasn t chuckling out loud I had a knowing grin on my face Sedaris is a master of diction he knows precisely which words and metaphors to use in order to evoke maximum comic value from his musings I did notice however that the lengthier pieces in this collection especially C O G and the title story were not quite as amusing or entertaining as the shorter pieces most notably Get Your Ya Ya s Out I Like Guys The Drama Bug and the hilarious Cyclops Perhaps Sedaris is more of a comic sprinter than a long distance runner No matter he s a funny guy and I look forward to reading his other books

Lucky >> A Tale of Determination By now most of you have heard of The Lovely Bones a movie which started as a book written by Alice Sebold If not for her quick thinking and clever strategy of getting into the mind of her attacker Alice would never have had the chance to write The Lovely Bones instead she would have become them This book is the story of her own brutal rape as a freshman at Syracuse University an act she tried very hard to forget but which became her driving force for justice and then for a spiraling descent into the lowest moments of her life If you ve ever wondered about the dirty little secrets entwined in this crime Alice reveals them all even the bad side of justice as we learn about the revenge rape of her friend whose friendship she ultimately loses As someone who was nearly raped by a man with a knife I have always wondered what if I hadn t maneuvered my way out of that incident Alice s story gives me closure and I now realize just how lucky I was
>> Lucky is a great read I ordered this book after reading The Lovely Bones It started out a little graphic with the details of the rape she went through But the rest of the story relates what the court system did to her and the reaction of those around her It was extremely well written and kept me wanting to return to reading it as soon as I could Anger is what I felt while fighting the battle right along with her I admire her fortitude to keep going and fight for the right justice I am very glad I read it and have shared it with many others >> A very mature subject Alice Sebold has gained much popularity with The Lovely Bones and is an excellent writer This book is no exception I do have concern that readers will be unprepared for the graphic nature of this book If not prepared and given to a young reader this will end with either lots of unanswered questions or feelings that need to be addressed very carefully Because it is a true story it does not come with a happy ending and a bow It is life Read with that in mind and if shared with young adult or teen women discuss Don t wait for questions use it as launching pad for a very difficult conversation Don t assume by the silence that someone has processed the magnitude of the subject matter Talk Talk Talk again This book will be with you for a long time

Yet we also hear firsthand accounts of the Rwanda genocide that shatters the peace and prosperity and also serves as a crushing reminder of the evil that lurks within some of us What s even more saddening is that one of Ms Novogratz s early partners turns out to become an inciter of violence and a war criminal
Instead I choose to remember the inspirational stories of businesses providing social good on top of viable economic business models of hospitals providing eye surgery for free to the poor while charging for those who can afford it of weavers who manufacture nets laced with chemical insect propellants that prevent malaria of irrigation equipment providers helping farmers improve the yield of their land of real estate developers in Pakistan that provide the poor an opportunity to purchase and own their houses with simple and affordable mortgages no subprime securitizations or negative amortization time bombs or CDOs
As a result of reading this book I ve promised to myself to attend the NY chapter of Ms Novogratz s Acumen Fund group to see how I can get involved I ve also just made a modest donation to the Acumen Fund and I hope to continue giving in the future
Read this book I hope it motivates and moves you as much as it did me
It s Not about the Bike My Journey Back to Life >> Great book This book is great if you want to know why Lance is so famous His story of the battle with cancer love and cycling is inspiring >> Puts a human face on a machine like athlete I agree with some of the reviewers here that Armstrong comes across as very headstrong at times and is not exactly modest about his achievements But I m sure that s exactly the reason why he came back from cancer to win seven Tours De France If nothing else this autobiography demonstrates the incredible self belief confidence and downright pig headedness that are necessary to succeed as an elite athlete
There are basically three parts to the book the first and third dealing with cycling and the second a more personal study of his cancer and his then wife Kik s attempts to conceive via IVF
The most interesting parts of the cycling sections are the discussion of tactics and the hierarchical structure of each team Every person in team cycling has a specific role and Armstrong goes into some detail describing the various strategies that each team and each individual within the team employs Armstrong portrays himself as someone who started riding purely out of anger and boredom and it is only gradually that he develops the experience focus and discipline to become a truly great rider culminating in his Tour de France wins Another interesting aspect is the almost gentlemanly traditions of the European classics such as not winning too many stages yourself allowing other riders to win their home Stage or not attacking when the leader is making a pit stop
The second part of the book deals with his cancer treatment and recovery And here we see Armstrong s bull headedness work against him the symptoms of testicular cancer with brain/lung mets were there for a while but it was only when his swollen testicles affected his riding that he admitted something was wrong His descriptions of the side effects of chemo the helpless frustration of remission and his aborted first attempt at a comeback are very affecting Another eye opening part of the book deals with he and his then wife Kik s attempts to conceive via IVF it s certainly not a simple process and what Kik goes through in the way of injections and examinations is quite disturbing To be honest I think it s pretty poor that Lance by now back cycling couldn t be around more to support her given her support for him during his remission
Armstrong is certainly no shrinking violet and you can call his enormous self confidence and belief arrogance if you want But Not About The Bike puts a human face on Armstrong s machine like determination and presents quite a well rounded picture of the man He s certainly not perfect but he is interesting and that s all that counts

A Grief Observed >> a Grief Observed by CS Lewis For CS Lewis fans I will be slaughtered by this review I absolutely love The Chronicles of Narnia Every single thing about it Recently my son was killed in a tragic accident and searching for some type of comfort I ordered this book I read this book I read it very slow to make sure nothing was missed This book rambled on with meaningless sentences very complicated hard to read pages and at the end of it I had learned nothing except he truly loved his wife and she suffered until the end of her life and it is his thoughts of her after her death There was not one single thing I could apply to my own life or use as something to comfort others The bottom line for me is 1 I would not read it again 2 I would not buy it as a gift for someone enduring grief sincerely r jeansonne >> Really gets to the heart of grief There are those who consider this book to be too maudlin or too unsettling But I know of no other source that comes closer to what grief is When I read this book I thought of past grief in my own life and how very acutely Lewis describes certain things that I have never been insightful or clever enough to put into words By sharing in Lewis s experiences with the loss of his wife and his recounting of the long process of coming to terms with that tragedy I was able to glean a great deal of comfort Lewis s awareness and keen perception continue to astonish me as I read his work and mostly lately this book Even when he describes or posits things he admits uncertainty about he does so in ways that nevertheless make you feel like you re getting closer to the substance of difficult emotions and questions I highly recommend this book to those who are having and have had major suffering in their lives
